At its annual meeting in Charlottesville, May 23, 2024, the Garden Club of Virginia bestowed an honorary membership on SGHS honorary board member and landscape architect Gordon Chappell. He has served on the GCV’s Research Fellowship Committee for nearly fifteen years, mentoring several graduate students. Most recently, serving as an advisor, Gordon played a significant role in shaping the search and selection processes for the firm of Nelson Byrd Woltz as GCV’s new landscape architects. Gordon has a long history with SGHS, serving as president of the board from 2002-2004. He is co-author, along with landscape architect M. Kent Brinkley, of The Gardens of Colonial Williamsburg (1995). In 2000 he oversaw the production of the Society’s “Southern Plant Lists,” a joint project with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, which includes plant documentation from 1734 to 1931. This resource continues to provide valuable information for garden research historians and restoration projects across the South. In 2019 Gordon was awarded the Flora Ann Bynum Medal, the Society’s highest honor for outstanding service.
