Grappling with the hot, sultry days of summer leads many Southerners to find respite lying beneath a ceiling fan on a screened porch, swimming in a pool, lake, or ocean (whichever is available), and seeking out the best vegetables and fruit in their gardens or at local farmer’s markets. At the top of the list is watermelon. With or without salt, watermelon is a staple. Heirloom varieties are especially desirable.

I’ve never been terribly fond of watermelon, which is a bit unusual given my deep Southern roots. This post makes me want to rush out and get one right now. The image is wonderful! Keep ’em coming.
